Nikita lives in the small town of Chegarinsk, which is right on the drug trafficking route from Central Asia to Siberia. Deciding to go to Moscow to build a musical career, Nikita wants to earn extra money. His childhood friend offers to transport a bag of drugs, and during a trip to Krasnoyarsk, Nikita miraculously does not fall into the hands of the police。超期服役的方二虎（汪宝生 饰）退伍返乡，发现家乡发生了很大变化。哥哥大虎（吴静芄 饰）早已是万元户，未婚妻水仙（傅艺伟 饰）家也是远近有名的冒尖户。但同时他也发现了愈来愈甚的贫富差距，思虑良久，他谢绝哥嫂为他买车赚大钱的想法，决心带领大伙走共同致富的道路。一次二虎去拉煤，偶遇以前的老排长俞成龙（江浩 饰），交谈中，二虎受到启发，决定回村办一个炼焦厂，但此举让大虎和弟弟反目，水仙也离二虎而去。挫折没有吓倒二虎，他在母亲（李琳 饰）和众乡亲的帮助支持下，出门学习烧焦技艺，终于炼出了合格的焦炭。望着穷乡亲们期盼的目光，二虎百感交集......。
