The film follows the title character (Jonigkeit) as he navigates his search for a moral center, after an act of compassion upends his life. Looking to authority figures he encounters along the way — including his eventual cellmate, Gene (LaBeouf) — Henry’s journey leads him down a road of manipulation and ethical uncertainty.。德瓦家和邻村是世仇，但是德瓦家的当家却一直致力于消弭两家的仇恨，甚至将不听劝阻参与两家械斗的儿子吉赶出了家门。吉痛定思痛，决定追随父亲的意思以德报怨，用爱去感化仇家，因此他通过接近仇家的儿子和女儿成功混进了邻村。吉的命运如何，他是否能消除两家延续数代的仇恨，化干戈为玉帛呢？。
